| From Thom Browne |
Thom Browne, and his play on the 1950's uniform suit, has become a notorious staple in the outlandish world of fashion. The name may be unknown to the average person, but his influence is undeniable. His tiny suit cuts, the high wasted ankle revealing pants, and the undersized shirts may evoke a "pee-wee Herman sentiment" to some, but to others it is genius. When I worked for Thom, his brand was still somewhat unknown, based out of his appointment only office on Little West 12th. During this period, I had the privilege of spending much time at the shop over in Queens where his suits are made. The suits are all hand tailored, and the process is overseen by an Italian master tailor named Rocco. Thom's prices are insane, I know. But one thing is guaranteed, he uses the highest quality fabrics and craftsmanship available. Thom opened his first official store in Tribeca, located at 100 Hudson. It has no sign, no welcoming aesthetics, and that's just how he likes it. He now also designs a line for Brookes Brothers, under the name Black Fleece. What I find fascinating is the resale market for Thom Browne, available on Ebay at great prices. Last fall, I purchased a grey wool trench coat for $650 that retailed for over $3000. You can also find incredible deals on his shirts and ties. A good way to stock up on some high quality basics. Thom Browne on Ebay
